COMMUNICATION

How Your Emails Are Undermining Your Authority

Using words such as "just" and "sorry to chase" undercut your requests and statements in communication. This looks at the specific email habits to lose, and how to sound direct without sounding cold

CAREERS

One Thing You Should Be Doing to Support Your Next Promotion

Most people wait for good work to get noticed rather than making it easy for our manager to see and subsequently advocate for. This breaks down the one career tracking habit that can help in your promotion conversations.

๐ŸŽจ IN THE FRAME David Hockney: A Year in Normandie at Serpentine North is free and running until 23 August. The exhibit shows a frieze of iPad paintings tracking a year through the changing Normandy seasons, alongside a handful of new portraits and still lifes made specifically for the show.

๐ŸŽง PRESS PLAY The Strategic Salary Series, hosted by advertising and tech leader Lucy Daramola, is built around one theme, women negotiating what they are actually worth. Each episode pairs her with a senior leader or industry name to talk through how they asked for more, what actually moved the number, and the mistakes most of us make before the conversation even starts.

๐Ÿ“š ON THE SHELF The Confidence Myth by IMD professor Ginka Toegel pushes back hard on the idea that women simply lack confidence at work, arguing the research does not support it and that the real problem is how competence gets recognised in the first place. She works through gaslighting, difficult conversations and the specific moments confidence gets read as arrogance in a woman and ambition in a man.

๐Ÿ’ท THE HOLD THAT WASN'T QUITE A HOLD The Bank of England kept rates at 3.75 per cent last Thursday, but three members voted to raise them instead, the most hawkish split of the year, with energy prices behind the concern. The vote suggests the committee is less convinced a cut is coming than markets had assumed.

๐Ÿง˜ REAL REST Yoga nidra is having a moment for a good reason. A meta-analysis published this year covering more than five thousand participants found it measurably lowers stress, anxiety and cortisol, and none of it requires anything more strenuous than lying still. A twenty-minute guided recording on Insight Timer or YouTube is enough to try and see if it's for you.

Communicate With More Authority

The University of Law's Influencing and Communication Skills for Managers, delivered through FutureLearn, explores improving communication in the workplace. Over three weeks, at around three hours a week, it covers the specific techniques for communicating clearly and influencing as a manager.
