The Hidden Career Skill No One Talks About: Strategic Visibility

You’ve probably been told (or think) hard work speaks for itself. But in competitive industries like finance, tech, and law, the truth is: if no one knows what you're working on, and why it matters, it’s easy to be overlooked. Strategic visibility is about making sure your contributions are seen, valued, and remembered by the right people without having to constantly talk about yourself.

Our Thoughts:

We often think visibility means shouting about our wins or being overly self-promotional at every opportunity. But real visibility is a lot quieter and smarter than that. It’s about intentionally positioning yourself where decisions are made, making sure key people see the value you bring, and helping others connect your name with impact in your organisation or team.

Progression and career growth can often depend on someone advocating for you, rather than just your performance, so being visible to decision-makers can be just as important as doing outstanding work.

Try This:
- Narrate your work: When updating colleagues or managers, don’t just share results, also share the story of what you solved, learned, or improved.
- Be seen in the right rooms: Attend strategic meetings, volunteer for cross-team projects, or ask to shadow key initiatives.
- Build advocates, not just contacts: Strengthen relationships with people who can champion your work when you're not in the room.
- Regularly reflect: Ask yourself, “Who knows about the work I’m doing right now? Who needs to know?”. If they don't know, how can I make sure they are updated on a consistent basis.

To go deeper on this topic, and why it’s not enough to stay heads down and hope your work speaks for itself, I recommend reading Why Men Win At Work by Gill Whitty-Collins. You can also use the Career Tracking Sheet in the Members Suite to record your wins and contributions, so you’re ready to share them at the right moments with managers and peers.
