The Psychology of Money: How Your Past Shapes Your Financial Future

I recently attended an event on the psychology of wealth hosted by Lombard Odier, and it couldn’t have come at a better time. I’d already been reflecting on this topic after reading The Psychology of Money by Morgan Housel last year (highly recommend if it’s not already on your list), and I wanted to open it up here for us to explore together.

You might think your money decisions are logical, but most of us are making financial choices based on how we feel, not what we know. Our beliefs about wealth, risk, and investing are often formed in childhood and early adulthood, shaped by what we saw, heard, or experienced, and these can stick with us into adulthood.

I know that my own thoughts about savings and spending are highly influenced by the way I was brought up, and that in a single-parent household, not experiencing financial security led me to be more risk-averse in my approach to investing.

For women in particular, those early learnings can show up as hesitation to invest, discomfort around wealth, or avoidance of financial conversations entirely.

Thoughts:
We often assume financial confidence comes from knowledge, but it’s just as often about mindset. You can be great with numbers and still hold yourself back because deep down, you think investing is risky, or financial security isn’t meant for you.

So what can we do? It starts with awareness. When you recognise how your money story was shaped, and that it’s not fixed, you can start making decisions based on your goals, not your fears or inherited beliefs.

Try This:
- Reflect on your earliest money memories: What did you see or hear about wealth growing up? How might that still be influencing you?
- Redefine what wealth means to you. Is it security? Freedom? Opportunity? Write it down.
- Learn by doing: Start small with a financial action you’ve been putting off - like reviewing your pension, reading about investing, or talking to a financial advisor.
- Talk about money: Whether it’s with a friend, partner, or mentor, start normalising open conversations about earnings, investments, and goals.

I am excited to be bringing more to the Peer Suite community on these topics! Stay tuned for an intimate Finance 101 event coming soon.

- Barclays' research found that over half of customers with £20K+ in savings are women, yet just 31% of investors on their platform are female. This piece explores what’s holding women back and how changing the conversation from saving to investing could shift that.
- The Tory Burch Foundation just announced a $1B commitment to support women founders. Here's what it means, who's backing it, and how it could change the game for female-led businesses.
- Sarah Guo just raised $100M for her fund, Conviction, focused entirely on backing the next wave of AI. Her approach to investing, and her vision for where we’re heading, makes this a must-read for anyone curious about what’s next in tech.
- We’ve all seen the headline stat that just 2% of venture funding goes to women, but this article argues it misses a bigger point.

This quote from James Clear resonated with me this week and serves as a great reminder that we need to protect our time and say no so that we can focus on the things that will have the highest impact in our lives.
"The more control you have over your attention, the more control you have over your future. And it starts with having enough courage to protect your time.
It's so easy to say yes. We want to be agreeable, helpful, liked. That's how time disappears and attention becomes fragmented: not in big chunks, but in a thousand small concessions.
What you trade your attention for is what your life becomes."
Have a great week! Your friend, Rebecca from Peer Suite x
