What Makes People Listen

Have you ever made a great point in a meeting only for it to land with silence, then someone else says the same thing, and suddenly it’s “a brilliant idea”? We've all been there. Getting your thoughts and ideas to have an impact isn’t only about what you say, but also how and when you say it, and how people perceive your voice in the room.

Whether you're trying to get buy-in for an idea, lead a team, win a client pitch or simply be heard in a room full of louder voices, communicating with impact is a superpower! Great communicators know how to connect effectively, adjusting their approach according to the audience to achieve their desired outcome.

Thoughts:

Throughout my career I have found that the people who made the biggest impact weren’t always the loudest or most polished; they were the ones who understood their audience, communicated with clarity, and made others feel heard.

My advice on communication is that speaking less, but with intention, often carries more weight than filling the room with noise. People won’t remember every point you made if you dominate a meeting, but they are more likely to remember the one thing you said that shifted the conversation or made them stop and think.

This will lead them to share your ideas with others, take action on what you recommended and gain trust in your expertise.

Try This At Your Next Meeting:

  • Start with the why: Help people understand the context before diving into the details. It builds relevance and attention.
  • Know your audience: A message that lands with senior leadership might need a different tone or framing than one for your team.
  • Practice powerful language: Drop phrases like “just an idea” or “I’m not sure, but…” if you’re confident in your point. Instead, use phrases like “I recommend” or “Here’s what I’m seeing”.
  • Get to the point: You don’t need to say more to be more impactful. Aim for clarity, not volume.
  • Follow up when needed: A quick message after a meeting can reinforce your idea and build alignment over time.

If this resonates, take a moment this week to notice whose communication style you admire, in meetings, on panels, or in media. What are they doing that earns attention and trust? Then try implementing this for yourself.

  • Over the next 20 years, trillions of pounds are expected to shift into women’s hands - through inheritance, entrepreneurship, and career growth.
  • Founders, take note: hiring friends or giving out fancy titles too early can backfire. Discover the most common hiring missteps and what to do instead if you’re building a team from scratch.
  • If your creativity feels stuck, it might not be your job - it might be your bedtime. Arianna Huffington shares why rest is her not-so-secret weapon for better thinking, clearer ideas, and getting things done.
  • What should you ask your financial advisor before investing more? Ellevest’s guide walks you through the must-ask questions that can make all the difference to your future financial plans.
  • LinkedIn is rolling out new AI features to help you figure out which roles are actually a good fit before you waste time applying.

Something I’ve been reflecting on lately is the difference between being busy and being effective. It’s very easy to fill our calendars, jump from meeting to meeting, and still feel like we’re not moving forward depsite having a full day. When we focus on doing fewer things, better, often we find that we can get better results. Just a little something I am working on!

Whatever your week looks like, I hope you make space for the things that matter!
