The Take: Why your personal brand matters, even if you're not trying to be an influencer

When we think about personal branding, we often associate it with solopreneurs, coaches, influencers, or founder-led brands. But in 2025, your personal brand matters more than ever, no matter what stage you're at in your career.

Whether you're just starting out, stepping into a bigger role, building a business, or navigating a pivot, your personal brand is important to get right.

So, what exactly is personal branding? It’s the way others experience you. It’s how people describe you when you’re not in the room. It’s the energy you bring to meetings, the way you write emails, show up online, pitch your ideas, or lead a team. It’s what makes someone think, β€œShe’s the one I want on this project,” or, β€œShe’d be great for that opportunity.”

Reminders:

  • It’s not about being loud or constantly posting. You shouldn't feel pressured to show up online every day to tick a box, just when it's relevant and impactful.
  • You don’t need to be the most confident voice in the room, just the most intentional with what you say and when you say it.
  • As a founder, your personal story is often part of the business story. People invest in people.
  • As a professional, how you show up impacts how others advocate for you, even when you're not present.

Try This:

  • Audit your first impression: Google yourself. Look at your LinkedIn. Ask a trusted friend or colleague how they’d describe your strengths. What are you currently known for?
  • Clarify your positioning: What do you want to be known for in the next phase of your career or business? What do people come to you for? Make sure this is reflected in your online presence and how you introduce yourself when networking, pitching a client, positioning yourself for promotion or looking for a new role.
  • Make one intentional tweak: Whether it’s updating your bio, leading with more confidence in meetings, or speaking up in an area you want to own, take one small step this week that aligns with your brand.

How I Increased My Salary by 75% in 2.5 Years (Here's What Worked) Between 2021 and 2024, I increased my salary by 75%. Not through job hopping, but by positioning myself for these increases within the same company. I'm sharing this because too many women accept whatever pay rise they're offered and assume hard work alone will get them fairly compensated. It won't. After a decade in banking, never negotiating, I realised I was significantly underpaid. When I joined an e-commerce brand as COO,...

Your Network Doesn't Have to Go Quiet In The Final Months Of The Year It's already happening. People are protecting their calendars and pushing meetings into January so they can focus on wrapping up end-of-year projects and hit their targets. But with two months left in 2025, you don't want to go quiet on your network and start from scratch in January when everyone's inbox is flooded with "Happy New Year, let's catch up!" messages. The challenge? Staying visible without being pushy. This time...

Tired of Being Too Available At Work? Try These Boundary Setting Techniques We're heading into the final stretch of the year, and that means urgent deadlines, last-minute projects, and the pressure to tie up every loose end before Christmas. Saying no to new work feels impossible, especially with year-end reviews around the corner. But iIf you're already feeling stretched thin, now is exactly the right time to set some boundaries. Maybe it's the late-night emails you feel obligated to answer....
